Online petition: Steve, please do something!

To: Steve Jobs, CEO, Apple

Dear Steve,

The time has come that we, the Apple-Mac users in Greece, call upon your help and ask for Apple’s attention.

In an attempt to stimulate the interest of those responsible for the ongoing, unacceptable situation in Greece in regard to Apple products and service, the “wewantAppleGreece.com” has been created by Greek Mac users.
We, the clients and end consumers of apple products, have long been left out of every new Apple development taking place in the rest of the EU. The service and support provided by several companies in our country do not follow even the basic standards set by Apple companies worldwide.
It is extremely important for one to realize that the percentage of the Mac platform in Greece today is much higher than that presented by the incomplete Greek IMC statistics which left out details of other Mac independent importers, sales from Europe, USA, etc. Despite the bad service and lack of support in our country, we still have a surprising high - and growing! - number of Mac users.
We are faced with closed doors at the local IMC, however with the immense effort of Mac users across the country, local Mac communities have been set up to provide support and to promote Apple products within our country.
We stand united in our quest for a competitive Apple products market, as well as real help, support and service for these products, set at the same high standards as the rest of the EU.

Mac users in Greece have come together to sign this petition and call for Apple Inc. and your help to set up Apple Greece, or even better “Apple Hellas”.

Steve, please do something!

We thank you for your time and eagerly anticipate your reply.
The Greek Mac users and friends.

Sincerely,
The Undersigned

All the above text is our online petition “Steve, please do something!”. The petition was uploaded on 27th of October, 2006 and it is still accessible here; no reply from Apple Inc. until now.

Andreas, thanks for the reply. I will contact you by email regarding the font issues but I will say that my problems are mostly related to using Greek fonts with InDesign and Photoshop for both print work and web design using an American keyboard. Many of the Greek fonts I’ve found don’t always have every Greek character option or convert from text files written in Greek.

I sympathize with you regarding your Mac frustration. I’ve been a Mac user since the first Mac SE and Mac II black & white computers around 1987. As a graphic designer for over 30 years I think I’ve had almost every Mac model up to my current Macbook (American version) I use here in Greece and there is always something that can go wrong. Going from OS9 into the OS10s can be a major headache for some, as well. I just switched to Leopard and it’s like learning the Mac all over again sometimes. I hope you don’t go over to the “dark side” and can hold out. I think you’ll be very disappointed with the PC world. Service and training for Mac here in Greece is certainly limited but I think demand is growing. Both Multirama and Plesio (sp?) now sell Macs but getting service is a major problem. We have three older adults here (not Greeks) who have gone to Mac from PC and we have one Greek person selling Apple product in the area. So, while things can go slowly in Greece the world is changing fast. Greece will catch up, I’m sure.

Since when did this petition become a discussion board?

You claim to be a linguist, but can’t you read...?

Cheers

Got a training day soon with rainbow in Cyprus, i’m a long time apple fanatic now working for public i will refer them to this site ! For the price, service and monopoly rainbow suck !

I heard today rainbow has been bought by another company who promise to do a better job not too difficult then !

Yes they are in negotiations.
Search “Info-Quest” in our site.

WE WANT A REAL APPLE STORE in GREECE

You have a fantastic brand, excellent stores, I mean who doesn’t just visit an apple store without reason, just for the fan of it. And then, you have rainbow… I mean mercy.

I understand that Greece is probably not on the top of your priorities, but for the sake of fairness, and it wouldn’t take all that long, bring Apple in Greece, because as it stands it is not. (hence the dismal sales volumes in Greece)

It’s been my understanding that Rainbow is been purchased by a new investment company. However, I’ve been told they are keeping most of the previous Rainbow staff and that Rainbow may still operate under that name. It seems we won’t have an actual Apple Store in Greece just yet. Also, last month I was told by a reliable source that there is a very skilled group of Mac technicians in Athens who have set up a business to repair Macs and offer technical assistance. If anyone has information about this service please report it here.

I just received a notification (twice) beginning with the words I cite here: “You [i.e. Steve Jobs] have a fantastic brand, excellent stores [etc.]”.
Several months ago I expressed a very hard opinion on Apple as a phenomenon, and as a “tool” for a scholar. Then I stopped because I was about to hurt the feelings of some who do not happen to be of the kind I am, and, in the whole world (since Apple advertising ALWAYS writes on the “world"), still surely several thousands are. What an Apple computer “offers” to linguist-philologist is NOT a solution but a constant exhaustion, anger, worry, horror, disgust. Font “managing” is a HORROR. To these problems is added , what perhaps does not come from Apple, Unicode, which is - as far as I have understood it - a hair-raising dilettantish mess. Of course, the Lords of the “best computer of the world” aught to have created something much better. For this kind of a traditionalist I am (and perhaps still several thousands in this “world” are) the presence of Apple in Greece does not seem to be a solution. I made several attempts also abroad! I am fighting with the “easy simplicity” of Apple for 18 years now. I am fighting with Tiger for the 4th years now, I sit down with a technician for two years now. I found a student who “grew up with Macintosh” and is specializing in font management. After six months, I don’t say that I learned nothing, but I say that STILL I do not find my way! It is REVOLTING that they always write on “ease” and “simplicity”. Passing to a PC is not simple either. I must do scholarly work and not experiment life-long. At the outset, 20 years ago, I did not know anything about any computer. I was trapped each time I was persuaded to prefer Apple Macintosh and not a PC.
